The 66-Omni101 potentiostat is used extensively as an
undergraduate teaching tool in Instrumental Analysis (CHEM 242) and
Quantitative Analysis (CHEM 441) at Southwest State University by Dr.
Jay Brown. His students perform polarography of cadmium and learn about
the effects of oxygen and suppression of maxima using Triton 66-X100.
For this experiment, they use a homemade dropping mercury electrode.
In a second experiment, they use cyclic voltammetry to study the electrochemical
reversibility of an Iron II/III couple. Finally, they use stripping
methods with a thin mercury film electrode (TMFE) on graphite to teach
students about the standard addition method to detect heavy metals in
drinking water (low ppb).
"The 66-Omni101 is ideal for undergraduate students
- the equipment is simple to operate and very reliable. The 66-Omni101
has been a central instrument in my undergraduate research group for
the last 3 years. It's been a great instrument."
