Dr. Kounaves' electrochemical research spans two diverse
areas - environmental analysis and materials science. For the research,
he uses Cypress Systems' computerized 66-CS1090 and micro-processor controlled
66-OMNI101.
His environment research is directed to developing
micro-lithographically fabricated micro-sensors, based on anodic stripping
voltammetry (ASV), to do on-site and in-situ monitoring of toxic heavy
metals in ground water systems. ASV provides a fast and sensitive method
for heavy metals. Dr. Kounaves is one of the leaders in this effort.
The other part of his research is aimed to studying the electrochemical
deposition of alloys and mixed metal oxide thin films, using single-precursor
heteropolymetallic complexes. His goal is also to understand the electron
transfer process of these unique molecules. His research group has been
supported by grants from the NSF, PRF, DOE, and EPA.
Dr. Kounaves received his BA and MS from California
State University at San Diego in 1978 and his Ph.D. (D.Sc) under Jacques
Buffle from the Université de Genève, Switzerland in 1985.
After postdoctoral training at SUNY Buffalo with Janet Osteryoung and
at Harvard Medical School with James Young, he joined the Chemistry
Department at Tufts University in 1988. In addition to his teaching
and research, he serves as the director of the graduate program in chemistry.
